The medium-voltage switchgear for plant/distribution systems serves as the power supply hub for the entire plant's auxiliary equipment/power supply system. The ability to quickly isolate faults during internal failures is crucial for the safe operation of the entire plant/distribution system. However, current protection schemes have the following problems:

1) The medium-voltage busbar lacks dedicated protection; it is instead handled by the backup protection of the incoming line switches.

2) The protection of the incoming and outgoing line switches requires coordination: the delay difference for instantaneous overcurrent protection is generally at least 300ms, or even 500ms.

3) The coordination difference for overcurrent protection is even longer, reaching 1-2 seconds.

Therefore, any fault occurring on the medium-voltage busbar in the plant/distribution system must be isolated with at least a delay. In other words, the existing protection for the plant's medium-voltage busbar to isolate faults immediately is lacking. However, with a little attention, it is easy to see that numerous electrical devices upstream and downstream of the medium-voltage switchgear busbar are equipped with fast-acting protection. In contrast, we would find it difficult to justify such negligence regarding the safety and reliability of medium-voltage busbars. Given the critical role of medium-voltage busbars, any delayed fault clearing is an extremely undesirable situation. Various faults within the switchgear cause the arc generated by the short-circuit current and its resulting high temperature, leading to a rapid expansion of the gas inside the cabinet, reaching its peak in a very short time, seriously endangering personal and equipment safety.
